schematic design|sketches begin

Time Frame: 3-4 Weeks

This is the step where we start to really have fun. If you have images of spaces that inspire you, this is a great time to share them with us. Typically, clients share their digital images, web pages, magazine clippings, etc with us. It's helpful for us if you are able to articulate what it is about particular spaces or images that you put in front of us - whether it's a color, texture, shape, etc. Just as important, it's helpful to know things that you don't like.

With the influences, possibilities and restrictions in mind, we start to sketch out the design. We move back and forth between hand sketching and 3D modeling. This step usually includes multiple iterations, or schemes, two or three of which are presented to the client.

Here, the big moves are made. We try not to get too caught up in the details at this point. It's more important to leave this stage having a solid floor plan, general exterior elevations, and a roof strategy. In the next phase, Design Development., we can flesh out the details - colors, textures, materials, cabinet designs, fixtures, etc.
